Patrick (Pat) Bennett
Interim President and Chief Executive Officer
Biography
Patrick (Pat) Bennett brings to Covad more than 20 years of successful sales
development and management expertise. After joining Covad in 2001, Mr. Bennett developed Covad's
direct sales division into a significant revenue channel and led the company's product development
and management teams in the development of Covad's VoIP and wireless initiatives.
Prior to joining Covad, Mr. Bennett was senior vice president of marketing and product
development for TESSCO Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of wireless communication solutions.
Prior to TESSCO, Mr. Bennett was executive vice president and chief operating officer of
Rogers Wireless, Inc., and was instrumental in driving significant improvements in all operating
metrics of the business.
Preceding Rogers Wireless, Mr. Bennett held increasingly senior roles in sales and marketing
at Sprint PCS, Cellular One, Communications Electronics, Inc., and American Beeper
Associates.
Doug Carlen
Senior Vice President and General Counsel
Biography
Doug Carlen oversees legal, regulatory and legislative affairs. He possesses a
deep knowledge of the business and regulatory environments in which Covad operates.
Mr. Carlen previously served as Vice President, Corporate and Legal Affairs and has been a
key part of Covad's legal team since September 1999. Before joining Covad, he was with Greene
Radovsky Maloney & Share, where he specialized in corporate law.
He holds a bachelors degree from the University of Southern California and received his law
degree from Hastings College of the Law.
Brett Flinchum
Chief Operations Officer
Biography
Brett Flinchum manages Covad's Operations organization which includes
Customer Operations, Network Services and Technology, Software and Information Systems, and Project
Management.
Since joining Covad in 1999, Mr. Flinchum has held increasingly senior management positions
in customer operations and strategic planning. During his tenure, Mr. Flinchum led the team that
established the first working line-sharing DSL service in the U.S. and led Covad's first-to-market
consumer ADSL offering.
Prior to Covad, Mr. Flinchum served as part of a change management, turn-around organization
at U.S. West, now Qwest Communications, where he was responsible for re-architecting the business,
repositioning the cost structure, and improving customer satisfaction. Prior to U.S. West, Mr.
Flinchum was with First Union Corporation, now Wachovia, First Citizens Bank, and IBM.
Mr. Flinchum holds a BA in Economics from Davidson College, North Carolina, and an MBA from
the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
Lee Gopadze
General Manager, Covad Wireless
Biography
Lee Gopadze oversees the sales, marketing, product development, and operations
of Covad's Wireless business unit.
Lee Gopadze has had an active and varied career in wireless telecommunications since the
early days of cellular. He has held a variety of senior executive positions in Marketing, Sales and
Operations at the wireless subsidiaries of Metromedia Telecommunications (CellularOne),
Southwestern Bell, and AirTouch Communications (PacTel Teletrac).
From 1997 though 2000 Lee served as a member of the executive team of Metricom Inc. and as
Senior Vice President - Operations. In 2000 Lee left Metricom to found the broadband wireless
carrier SkyRiver Communications Inc. After serving as its CEO and President, Lee left in 2003 to
found Broadband Initiatives LLC, a consulting firm in broadband telecommunications.
Starting in 2005, Lee had been responsible for the integration of wireless services into
Covad's access product line and acted as the principal architect for Covad's wireless strategy. He
has most recently served as Vice President of Wireless Operations, Engineering, and Customer
Experience.
Lisa Graham
General Manager, Wholesale Services
Biography
Lisa Graham brings to Covad more than 20 years of sales development, sales
operations, strategic account management and marketing experience in the high tech industry.
Since joining Covad in 2000, Ms. Graham has held several senior management positions within
Covad Sales. Currently, Ms. Graham oversees Covad's wholesale, reseller and strategic partner
programs, which together account for 70 percent of total company revenues. Ms. Graham is
responsible for driving sales growth by developing and managing key strategic relationships and
high-volume consumer and enterprise partnerships.
Prior to Covad, Ms. Graham served as a sales representative at Hewlett-Packard, where she
achieved $500 million in PC system revenues and increased reseller breadth for HP product lines by
25 percent.
Previously, Ms. Graham worked as an independent consultant specializing in developing
distribution channels for new products, and in sales and marketing with Apple Computers and Claris
Corporation, a subsidiary of Apple Computers.
Ms. Graham received a BA in Management from St. Mary's College, Moraga, Calif.
Jake Heinz
Vice President and General Manager, Covad VoIP
Biography
Jake Heinz is responsible for all of Covad's cross-functional VoIP activities to
ensure that Covad VoIP provides a consistently stable and high-quality product to all VoIP
customers. He directs implementation of VoIP product enhancements, leads relationships with VoIP
vendors, and initiates improvements in our VoIP customer and partner processes.
Mr. Heinz previously managed Covad's Customer Operations organization in Herndon, VA which
includes VoIP Support, VoIP Provisioning, Hosted Services and LPV Operations.
Mr. Heinz joined Covad in 2002 and prior to the Covad's acquisition of the VoIP provider
GoBeam he held positions within the Customer Operations leadership team over portions of the
broadband access business. During this time he architected the restructuring of the operational
team for the Covad Direct business to provide an enhanced customer experience and increased cost
effectiveness.
Prior to Covad, Mr. Heinz served as the Network Operations Director for Gemini Networks, a
privately held communications company where he was responsible for the core network infrastructure,
customer experience and portions of the network build. His telecommunications experience also
includes management roles at several start up networking companies and at MCI's data networking
center in Cary, North Carolina.
Mr. Heinz received a bachelors of science in Electrical Engineering from the United States
Naval Academy and served five years of active duty as a commissioned Naval Officer.
Ron Marquardt, Ph.D.
Chief Technology Officer
Biography
. Ron Marquardt is responsible for the planning and execution of short- and
long-term technology paths for Covad's network infrastructure and service offerings. His team of
engineers are accountable for network architecture, service design and engineering, vendor testing
and management, as well as network and collocation planning, design, and analysis.
After joining Covad in 1999, Dr. Marquardt worked as a Director in the Network Engineering
department, where he led the development of Covad's Layer 3 IP services which are now responsible
for roughly 70% of Covad's revenue. He later directed the team responsible for system analysis and
core database and systems infrastructure in Software Engineering. Dr. Marquardt also led the
development of Covad's Voice over IP (VoIP) and fixed broadband wireless access strategies, and was
the first product manager for Covad's wireless services.
Prior to Covad, Dr. Marquardt managed the development of new voice and data network platform
development at Racal-Datacom and the Access Network Electronics division of Raychem Corporation. In
those companies, he was responsible for design and development, in addition to the acquisition of
new technologies to augment in-house engineering capabilities and the outsourcing of key hardware
and software design work overseas. He was also a program manager overseeing the funding of industry
technology-development consortiums through the National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) and its Advanced Technology Program.
Dr. Marquardt holds an S.B. degree in Physics from MIT, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied
Physics from the California Institute of Technology
Cornelia Pool
Chief Information Officer
Biography
Cornelia Pool is responsible for Covad's information technology strategy,
ensuring that Covad optimizes its investment in IT and enables the transformation of the business
through high levels of automation. Ms. Pool has responsibility for the Covad Software organization
and Corporate Services department.
Ms. Pool comes to Covad with almost two decade's experience in information technology and has
gained a wide variety of expertise in all elements of the systems lifecycle from strategy through
implementation and operations.
Prior to joining Covad in 2000, Ms. Pool served on a team that implemented an information
management system that enabled order-to-cash systems for a Virtual ISP provider, Laserlink.net Inc.
Before joining Laserlink.net, Ms Pool spent eleven years in the Information Technology sector in
South Africa. She implemented POS and replenishment systems for Pep, Southern Africa's best known
chain of retail stores with over 1000 stores, and managed software solutions for Bonita, now
Parmalat South Africa. She spent her early career with the Western Cape Provincial Administration
working on Hospital Systems on mainframes and implemented first generation client-server solutions.
She also developed most of the systems for Government Motor Vehicles Department of which some were
used nationwide.
Ms. Pool attended Technikon Free State (now Central University of Technology, Free State) in
South Africa.
Justin Spencer
Chief Financial Officer
Biography
Justin Spencer joined Covad in 2002 and currently serves as CFO with
responsibility for all financial, accounting, human resources, and corporate development activities
within Covad. Prior to this, Mr. Spencer served as Vice President of Finance overseeing Covad's
Corporate Development, Financial Planning and Investor Relations activities. Mr. Spencer began his
employment with Covad in the product management organization.
Prior to Covad, Mr. Spencer worked for Hewlett Packard, helping to build its highly
successful Service Provider business. Mr. Spencer has held positions in product management,
business strategy, finance and corporate development in several industries including chemicals,
financial services, healthcare, technology and telecommunications.
Mr. Spencer received a BA in Accounting from the University of Utah and an MBA from The
Wharton School of Business.
