Service Set-up

Personal Web Space (home.covad.net/~yourname)

Covad provides personal web space with most of our services, so customers can upload content on to the internet. The personal web space is located on a number of dedicated servers, maintained by Covad, that are used to host web space for its residential customers. The amount of web space that is allocated for your use is dependent on your type of service.

Service Type Personal Web Space Size
Standard DSL Link Personal Web Space is currently not offered for this service
Standard DSL 10 MB
Standard DSL Plus 10 MB
Business DSL Plus (all speeds) 10 MB
Business T1 (all speeds) 10 MB

If you have elected to take advantage of your personal web space, your web address will be http://home.covad.net/~ userID. Custom domain names cannot be used in conjunction with the complimentary web space provided by Covad. Covad does offer Domain web hosting for its business customers (Business DSL Plus and Business T1 services). But, business customers cannot use both the personal web space and the domain web hosting. They must choose one.

Uploading your content to the Covad web space

Once you have decided on and developed the content of your site, you will need to upload it to the Covad web server. There are several ways that this can be accomplished. You can either install an FTP (file transfer protocol) program to upload your files or another method is to use you web browser (the following example uses Internet Explorer).

In the address field of your web browser, type: ftp://home.covad.net to access the web space:

A login popup will appear which will prompt you to enter a username and password. In these fields, you will use the User ID and the password, which you chose during the ordering process. This User ID and password is also used to login to My Covad Account.

Once you have successfully logged in, the browser will populate with the files that are stored in your web space. When you first pull up the personal web space, the browser will be empty of files. But you are now ready to transfer the files from your computer to the browser's window.

Select the files from your computer and drag them to your browser. For the sake of this example, the index.html file was saved onto the desktop of the computer and from there the file will be dragged into the window:

Once you have dragged and dropped the file into the ftp window, you will see a popup state that the files are currently being uploaded to the server:

The file has now been successfully uploaded to the Covad web server. To view your content on the web simply type in your address in the browser (http://home.covad.net/~UserID)

The landing page of your site must be saved as index.html. If you do not have a file titled index.html in your web space, then a directory of your files will be shown when you navigate to your site:

Congratulations! You have successfully uploaded your site to the Covad personal web space. You can also use an FTP program to upload your content. To use an FTP program, set the Host, URL or address to home.covad.net/~userID. The userID and password will be your My Covad Account login. Once logged in, you can drag and drop files from their location on your computer to the Covad web server.
